Journal swaps and wiki write capability

Result

Whether the model knew that writing was impossible mattered more than whether its publication journal was retained, removed, or replaced with another base trace's journal.

  • With WRITE_WIKI available, all 14 branches wrote the correct answer and then submitted it privately.
  • When the action was visibly removed, all 14 branches skipped writing and submitted the correct private answer.
  • When the action remained visible but every write failed, all 14 branches retried until the five-step budget expired. They made 56 rejected writes, never submitted, and left the board unchanged.

The pattern held under retained, ablated, and swapped journals. This is a mechanistic result for two independently sampled publication-plan prefixes, not a population estimate over model trajectories.

Design

The task and helpful collaborator condition are held fixed. The answer depends on reading nonce 731 from sealed-input-alpha, adding 19, and submitting 750. A later collaborator succeeds only if the focal agent writes that exact answer to derived-alpha.

Two independent base trajectories were generated before any branch. Both used READ_WIKI -> WRITE_WIKI -> SUBMIT. At every checkpoint before the first successful write, the runner crossed:

  • journal: retained, ablated, or swapped with the other base's newest sentence;
  • write capability: available, visibly removed from the action menu, or unexpectedly fail-closed at execution.

The initial checkpoint has no journal to remove or swap. This yields 42 matched branches: three capability states at the initial checkpoint and nine journal-by-capability cells at each of two later pre-write checkpoints, for each base.

The fail-closed intervention is initially latent. After the first rejected attempt, the failure appears in Prior action results, so subsequent retries are choices made with the failure visible. The removed intervention instead omits WRITE_WIKI from the action prompt before the model chooses.

Manipulation checks

Both bases read the sealed page, formed a publication plan before acting, posted the correct derived answer, and submitted correctly, with zero parse errors.

All 12 swapped branches:

  • named the other base trajectory as donor;
  • replaced the newest sentence with a different donor sentence;
  • preserved every earlier journal sentence;
  • preserved the source prefix's actions, reads, and board snapshot;
  • began before any successful focal write.

All 14 removed branches made zero write attempts. All 14 fail-closed branches made four rejected attempts, recorded write_failed, and left zero focal entries on the board.

Interpretation

The model is not generally unable to abandon publication. It does so perfectly when the affordance is absent before action selection. The failure is narrower: once the action remains offered and returns a runtime error, the model repeats the planned operation despite four explicit failures, sacrificing its own private submission.

That contrast is evidence for action-level retry lock-in under these two prefixes. It is not evidence that the journal text causes the lock-in. Ablation and swapping did not change behavior, and both donor sentences expressed the same broad publication plan. A stronger journal-content test would require independently sampled publish and withhold plans under an environment where both arise naturally.

No alternative-channel behavior was observed, but the action space contains only the wiki, private submission, reading, and NOOP. The result therefore says the model did not try another wiki page or NOOP; it cannot establish what the model would do with email, files, or other communication tools.
