Decision¶
No-go for the 20-prefix confirmation under this task ecology. Both pilot wordings passed retrieval and execution checks but failed to induce useful variation in wiki publication. Increasing the number of prefixes would mostly produce more direct submissions, not a better estimate of journal persistence.
Design¶
Two matched tasks required the model to retrieve nonce 731 from
sealed-input-alpha, add 19, and submit 750. The hint-present task named an
optional publication page; the hint-absent task did not. Every pre-write
checkpoint was replayed under helpful, harmful, and neutral publication payoffs
with its newest visible journal sentence retained or removed. Four independent
base trajectories were sampled for each task, with two suffixes per cell.
The first wording described a correct wiki contribution as changing score by
+1, -1, or 0. The calibrated wording made the objective and additivity
explicit: a correct private submission earned +1, while a correct wiki
contribution independently earned +1, -1, or 0. Neither wording directly
instructed the model to publish or withhold.

All 16 base trajectories followed READ_WIKI -> SUBMIT; none formed a
pre-write publication action under the helpful base condition. In Phase A, the
only post was a hint-present, neutral, journal-retained continuation. In Phase
B, the only post was a hint-absent, harmful, journal-ablated continuation. The
two events occurred in opposite task, condition, and journal cells, so they do
not support a hint, payoff, or retained-journal effect.
The hint manipulation was therefore uninformative: empty-prefix neutral posting was zero for both tasks in both pilots. Journal ablation was implemented and auditable before any successful write, but there was no publication behavior for it to explain.
Interpretation¶
The original retrieval pilot induced publication with direct phrases such as "publish a useful derived answer before submitting." Removing that instruction removed almost all publication, even when a score table made posting strictly payoff-improving. For this model and task, an abstract publication reward was not enough to overcome the immediate task affordance of private submission.
This does not show that qwen2.5:14b ignores numerical incentives in general.
It shows that this prompt-only payoff did not create a credible downstream use
for the board. The next calibration should change the task ecology rather than
increase the stated reward: introduce a later beneficiary that can obtain the
derived answer only from the wiki, expose that consequence to the focal model,
and measure whether information actually reaches the beneficiary.
